No matter what the color of the ball is- Red, White or Pink- Virat Kohli will find a way to stamp his authority on it. And, he did that with aplomb during the second day of India’s maiden Day-Night Test against Bangladesh at the Eden Gardens. The Men in Blue are well on their way to register their 12th consecutive series win at home.

After his fellow Delhi teammate Ishant Sharma became the first bowler from the country to take a five-wicket haul in the Pink Ball Test, the Indian captain, Virat Kohli became the first Indian batsman to rack up a three-figure score. Resuming his innings on the overnight score of 59, Kohli quickly got into his groove stroking nonchalant cover-drives to bring his 27th ton in the purest form of the game.

Taijul Islam’s stunner ends Virat Kohli’s innings

The Indian captain was looking prime to get his eighth double-hundred before his innings was cut short by a stunner of a catch from Taijul Islam at deep square-leg on the bowling of Ebadot Hossain during the 81st over of the Indian innings, following which the bowler proceeded to give Kohli a Sheldon Cottrellesque salute.

Meanwhile, Kohli who became the fastest to cross 5,000 runs as captain also went on to complete his 41st century in International cricket while being at the helm, equalling Ricky Ponting’s record in almost half of the innings. Kohli’s dismissal did create a bit of stutter as India lost five wickets cheaply against the seam bowling of Bangladesh, forcing the Indian captain to declare the innings at 347/9.

With the ball jagging around, it was always going to be a herculean task for the Bangladeshi top-order to survive against the Indian pace attack. And, it proved to be more than that! Ishant Sharma continued from where he had left as he blew away the top-order of the visitors to reduce them to 13/4.

But, then Bangladesh’s two most senior batsmen decided to take some responsibility and insinuated a valiant counterattack. Both Mahmudullah (39) and Mushfiqur Rahim (24*) played their natural game by taking the attack to the Indian fast bowler’s strategy of pitching it short. The duo accumulated a 50+ stand for the fifth wicket before Mahmudullah was forced to retire-hurt courtesy a potential hamstring injury.
