The pace bowlers once again did the job for India in the ongoing Test series against England by restricting the home team to 246 on the opening day of the Southampton Test. On a track which looked like suitable to the batsmen, Indian pacers ran through the top order as England were reduced to 36/4 and six down at 86. But Sam Curran turned up with the bat once against with a brilliant 78-run knock to help England to go past the 200-run mark. India ended the day at 19/0 in the four overs they batted before stumps.

All the major stats and numbers that were recorded during the first day’s play at the Rose Bowl:

5 – For the first time, five different bowlers took ten and more wickets in a Test series for India. This is also the first time that four different Indian pacers took 10+ wickets in a Test series.


20y 88d – At the age of 20 years and 88 days, Sam Curran became the youngest to score multiple fifties in a Test series while batting at No.8 and lower. India’s Kapil Dev aged 21 years and 11 days when he smashed his 2nd fifty-plus score batting down the order against Pakistan in the 1979/80 home series.


23 – India conceded 23 byes in England’s first innings. This is the first time India conceded more than 20 byes in a Test innings since the 2008 Delhi Test against Australia where they conceded 28 byes in the 1st innings.


23 – The 23 extras India conceded are also the most known byes conceded by any team in the first innings of a Test on an opening day in the last 100 years. India conceded 27 out of the 40 extras (29 byes, 9 leg byes and 2 no-balls) in the first innings of the Kanpur Test in 1964 against England.


39 – For the first time in his captaincy career in Test cricket, Virat Kohli fielded an unchanged playing XI. He did it in his 39th Test match which is the 2nd most behind Graeme Smith who fielded an unchanged XI for the first in his 44th Test as South African skipper.


86 – Ishant Sharma completed 250 wickets in Test cricket in 86 matches which are the 2nd most taken by any player for the milestone. Jacques Kallis needed 127 matches to complete 250 wickets in this format.


200 – Number of catches Virat Kohli has taken in International cricket. He is the 4th Indian after Rahul Dravid, Mohammad Azharuddin and Sachin Tendulkar to claim 200 catches in international cricket.
