Faf du Plessis fined for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision: India won the 4th ODI against South Africa at Chennai; it was majorly due to the manner in which their spinners controlled the Protea batsmen. After AB de Villiers if the South African batting relies on someone it’s their T20I skipper Faf du Plessis. The wicket had purchase for the spinners and India’s left arm spinner Axar Patel tied him up, and successfully induced an edge on the 4th ball of the 15th over.
The umpire had little doubt in raising his finger but, du Plessis stayed there with an expression of disapproval against the umpire’s ruling. Since it is a breach of the ICC of Conduct he has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.
Faf was found guilty of “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an International Match”.
Following the match, du Plessis was informed about the charge put on him; he admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by the Match Referee Chris Broad. And so there was no need for a formal hearing.
The on field umpires S Ravi, C Shamsuddin and the third umpire AK Chaudhary had charged Faf du Plessis for the breach.
All Level 1 breaches of the ICC Code of Conduct carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand and/or a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee.
India eventually won the match quite comfortably as the Proteas fell 35 runs short of the target they had to chase. The high points of the match were centuries by India’s Virat Kohli (138) and a fighting ton by South African skipper AB de Villiers, who had despite the superb innings could not win the match for his team.
