Former Australia cricketers Ryan Harris and Matthew Elliot have been appointed as High Performance coaches by Cricket Australia. The coaching roles of high-performance coaches include the development of younger players, something that both these former cricketers for Australia are currently doing. While Ryan Harris has been one of the most recent to bow out of cricket, it is Matthew Elliot that is a name that most do not know.

Elliot was the opening batsman for Australia prior to the pair of Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer came to the scene and took the team by storm by making the opening slot their own. Pat Howard, the director of the National Performance squad also released a statement on the duo being appointed to their respective roles.

“Both have come through the Cricket Australia coaching pathway, being involved in underage national championships, and have a strong understanding of the challenges that lie ahead in developing Australian cricketers to be ready for first-class and international cricket,” he said on Tuesday.

He added that they are experienced enough to be joining the High Performance team at the National Cricket Centre headed by Troy Cooley. “Ryan and Matthew join what is already an experienced and highly credentialed coaching team at the National Cricket Centre, led by Troy Cooley, and both will be instrumental in guiding the young talent within our ranks.”

Cooley himself was pleased by the new additions he has to his team of coaches. “Both will be heavily involved in mentoring our elite junior talent, with Matthew to be heavily involved particularly from a batting perspective, and Ryan to have a significant involvement in our pace bowling program,” he said.
