Former South Africa cricketer Gary Kirsten has proved his metal in the coaching field. As the coach of the Indian side, he helped them lift the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011 while with South Africa, he played a major role in their domination in Test cricket. Kirsten is currently involved in the IPL as the coach of Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The 50-year-old is thinking of taking another coaching stint for an international team. However, as per Kirsten, he wishes to take the job only for limited overs cricket. Interestingly, the post for Australian cricket coach is vacant after the exit of Darren Lahmen following the ball-tampering saga while Englan coach Trevor Bayliss will quit the job next year.

Trying to grow my skills in white-ball formats: Kirsten

Kisten while talking to Omnisport said, “I am trying to grow my skills as much as possible in the white-ball format, so that could be of real interest to me. I think the idea of coaching an international team across all formats is becoming more unlikely for young coaches, because it’s just not sustainable, especially with a young family.”

When he was asked If he’d think of joining Australia or England, the former Proteas opener was quick to say that he will think about it. “Absolutely, I would certainly be considering it,” said Kirsten.

According to Kirsten, the coaching segment in the world is set to change as sides are looking for format-specific coaches at the moment. “Countries are starting to split coaching roles and I think it will happen more and more. Australia dabbled with it and we are even getting counties now signing up Twenty20 coaches,” said Kirsten.

Interestingly, Kirsten said that the Australian cricket board might consider Justin Langer or Ricky Ponting for the job as they know the ‘Australian way’ better than anyone else in the world. “I know JL well and he’s a great coach, he has all the right credentials and they also have Ricky Ponting who has done a fantastic job with their T20 team,” Kirsten added.
