Hanif Mohammad was amongst Pakistan’s run machines when they stepped into Test cricket and was known for batting long innings. He was the country’s first ever star player and was also referred as the “Little Master”. Hanif was one of the four Mohammad brothers to represent Pakistan in Test cricket and had a son (Shoaib Mohammad) who played in Test and ODI formats for the country. The Pakistan skipper was an occasional wicket-keeper and also had the ability to bowl with both the hands.

On the occasion of Hanif Mohammad’s 83rd birthday anniversary, we look at his career numbers:

58.73 – Hanif Mohammad’s batting average of 58.73 as a captain is the highest for Pakistan in Test cricket. Among the 13 players with 500+ runs as Pakistan captains, Younis Khan (55.85) comes next to Hanif in batting averages. In the 18 innings as a Test captain, Hanif aggregated 881 runs with four centuries and a fifty. Only Saleem Malik (21) played more innings as a Pakistan Test captain than Hanif without bagging a duck.

203* – His innings of 203* against New Zealand in 1965 in Lahore is the first ever double century by a Pakistan captain. Hanif was the 2nd Pakistan player to score a Test century after Nazar Mohammad and also the 2nd captain with a hundred after Javed Burki.

Hanif’s 337 is also the highest individual score for Pakistan in Test cricket.

337 – The 337-run knock by Hanif is also the highest individual score by any player in an away Test match. He went past England’s Wally Hammond’s 336* which was recorded in 1933 in Auckland.

499 – Hanif’s 499 for Karachi against Bahawalpur in 1958/59 was the then highest individual score in first-class history. Only Brian Lara, with an unbeaten 501 in 1994/95 went past Hanif’s record till date.

970 – Hanif batted 970 minutes during his record-breaking effort of 337 in the following-on innings. This is the longest innings in the terms of minutes in Test history and he remains as the only player to bat over 900 minutes in a Test inning.
