Kolkata Knight Riders‘ new captain Shreyas Iyer has revealed his most preferred batting position, although he said he is open to take up any responsibility for his franchise. Iyer was in great batting form in the recently concluded T20I series against Sri Lanka and continued his impressive run in the Tests as well. He has shown a lot of versatility already by excelling at different batting positions in the Indian team.

The 27-year-old played a vital role for his former franchise Delhi Capitals since taking up the captaincy in 2018, and he took the side the playoffs for two consecutive years in 2019 and 2020. The right-hander wasn’t retained ahead of the 2022 mega auction and KKR bagged his services for a whopping INR 12.25 crore after an intense bidding war. He is currently in quarantine for the upcoming IPL 2022 season and is expected to be back in training soon.

The situations and roles can change based on conditions: Shreyas Iyer

Iyer explained that the anchor role can differ from time to time and noted the importance of finishing games and making it count once the batter gets set at the crease. He added that every player will have the responsibility of winning games for their side. He revealed his favourite batting position as No.3 where he has been far more effective.

“You can’t basically portray yourself as an anchor. It can differ as well. On a given day, I can be a power-hitter and there can be some other player who can play an anchor role. The situations and roles can change based on conditions, and you can’t basically rely on a certain player to anchor the innings. If it’s your day, you need to go all out and see to it that you win the match for the team,” Iyer told in a video posted by KKR’s YouTube Channel.

“Basically, the responsibility has to be taken by all players in the team — to go out there and win the match and not rely on other players. For me, personally, I feel No.3 is my position because I love to bat there and I’ve been batting at that position since very long. I’ve been very flexible; wherever the team wants me to bat at, I’m very comfortable at that and I’m ready to explore,” he added.
