Bangladesh Under-19s made it to the final of the U19 CWC 2020 after a convincing victory over New Zealand in the semi-final. Beckham Wheeler-Greenall’s unbeaten 75 off 83 balls played a key role in taking New Zealand to 211/8. His knock helped the junior Blackcaps score 69 runs in the last 50 balls and cross the 200-run mark. Bangladesh lost two early wickets in the chase but Mahmudul Hasan Joy shared partnerships of 68 and 101 respectively with Towhid Hridoy (40) and Shahadat Hossain (40*). Mahmudul scored 100 off 127 before getting out but his knock was enough to seal a 6-wicket win for Bangladesh with 35 balls to spare.

All the statistical highlights from Bangladesh’s semi-final victory against New Zealand:

1 – Bangladesh Under-19s qualified for the final of a U19 CWC for the first time. Prior to this edition, Bangladesh qualified to the semi-final only once – in 2016 where they finished No.3 after winning 3rd place playoff.

In fact, this is the first time Bangladesh have made it to the final of a major ICC tournament – ICC World Cup (Men’s / Women’s / U19), ICC T20 World Cup (Men’s/ Women’s) and ICC Champions Trophy.

1 – Mahmudul Hasan Joy became the first Bangladesh player to score a century in a U19 CWC knockout. Tanzid Hasan’s 90 in the quarter-final against South Africa was the previous highest.

2 – This was the 2nd century for Mahmudul Hasan Joy in a Youth ODI knockout. He scored 109 during the England U19 Tri-series final against the Indian team in 2019. Mahmudul is now only the 3rd player after Unmukt Chand (4) and Sami Aslam (2) with multiple tons in Youth ODI knockout matches.

3 – This is the 3rd consecutive time that Bangladesh has defeated New Zealand in the U19 CWC. They now lead the head to head record against the Blackcaps in U19 CWC by 3-2. In all Youth ODIs, the Bangladesh team have defeated New Zealand in seven out of ten matches.

10 – Bangladesh has not lost any of their last ten matches in the Youth ODI cricket; the longest unbeaten streak for them in this format. Bangladesh won each of their last nine completed Youth ODIs which is now their longest such streak.

212 – Bangladesh’s 212-run chase in this match is their joint 2nd highest successful run-chase in a Youth ODI knockout. They also chased 212 in the 2016 U19 CWC quarter-final against Nepal. Their highest is 218 against Sri Lanka in the 2005 Tri-Nation tournament final.

1001 – Tanzid Hasan completed 1000 runs in the Youth ODI format with the three runs he scored in this match. He is now the 11th player from Bangladesh and overall the 30th player with 1000 runs in Youth ODI cricket.
