England, the runners-up of the 2018 Women’s WT20, started off the 2020 edition same as the defending champions Australia by losing the first match. Batting first after losing the toss, England Women were limited to 123/8 which wouldn’t have been possible without a 41-ball 50 from Natalie Sciver.

After losing an early wicket in the chase, the duo of Dan van Niekerk (46) and Marizanne Kapp (38) shared 84-run partnership in 13 overs. Both the players got out in quick span and the required rate spiked up to 11. Chole Tryon and Mignon du Preez struck maximums in the last two overs to seal the chase with two balls to spare.

All the statistical highlights from South Africa Women’s close win against England Women:

1 – South Africa Women defeated England Women for the first time in a T20 World Cup match after losing the previous three meetings. Overall, this was only the 3rd win in the T20I format for South Africa Women against England out of 19 meetings.

England Women won 15 of those 19 games while another game ended without a result. Other two T20I wins of South Africa Women against England are by 17 runs in the 2016 Cape Town T20I and by 6 wickets in the 2018 T20I Tri-series.


2 – Dane van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp became only the 2nd pair in the history of the T20 World Cup to affect the double of 30+ runs and 2+ wickets for the same team. Hayley Matthews and Stafanie Taylor affected this double in the 2016 Women’s T20 CWC match against Bangladesh.


100 – This game against England is the 100th appearance in a T20I match for Mignon du Preez. She became the first player from South Africa across Men’s or Women’s cricket to complete 100 T20I appearances. Overall, Mignon is the 13th player in Women’s cricket to feature in 100 T20Is.


124 – The 124-run chase by South Africa Women is now their highest successful chase in the T20 World Cup. Their previous highest chase is 115 against New Zealand in the 2014 edition. Overall, this was only the 5th time in 13 instances than the South Africa Women successfully chased down a target in the Women’s T20 CWC.

This is also the highest successful chase by any side against England Women in the history of the tournament. West Indies’ 116-run chase in the 2018 edition was the previous highest successful chase over the England team in Women’s T20 CWCs.


1020 – Dane van Niekerk completed 1000 runs in T20I run-chases; the 6th player with this milestone in Women’s cricket. She got to this landmark in only 35 innings; the quickest of the six players. Across Men’s and Women’s, Niekerk is the joint 2nd fastest to 1000 runs in T20I chases. Virat Kohli got there in only 21 innings while Glenn Maxwell also needed 35 innings.
