India’s loss in the fourth ODI against New Zealand has raised one big question among cricket fans – Is India over-reliant on Virat Kohli to finish chases? Chasing 260 runs to win, India could muster only 241 in 48.4 over and fell short of the target by 19 runs. As a result, the series now stands 2-2 with the decider to be played at Visakhapatnam on Saturday.

The chase was happening till Kohli was batting. India, after losing Sharma cheaply again had found the right track with Rahane forging a 79 runs second wicket stand with Kohli. However, once the Black Caps broke through with the wicket of Kohli in the 20th over, things became awry for India. Skipper MS Dhoni, who himself failed to do anything about the chase, faced some tough questions after the defeat in his hometown at Ranchi.

“Stats don’t tell you the full story. We have not played too many ODIs in the last one and a half years and during that period there was one series against Zimbabwe. When we did play a lot of the times our top-order batted beautifully. So you can’t really say that. We do have other batsmen who can also do the job.”

Dhoni also put his weight behind the youngsters and said that it is not easy chasing in these kinds of surfaces and it is a “learning curve” for the inexperienced players in the side.

The 35-year-old had to face another interesting question. With age not being on his side, he was asked if he would like to give up the wicket-keeping gloves and consider playing as a specialist batsman. Dhoni answered it in his trademark style.

“Who’ll field for me? I’m not a good enough fielder without the gloves,” he remarked.

Dhoni may not be the best keeper against pace as he does not dive but his fast hands against spinners make him amongst the best wicketkeepers.
