After the culmination of the IPL, the Indian players will get busy with the national commitments as they have packed schedule ahead of them. The Men in Blue play a one-off Test against Afghanistan at home before travelling to England and Australia later in the year as part of their preparations for the upcoming 2019 World Cup.

While there were talks of hosting one of the Tests against Australia as a day/night fixture, the BCCI declined the options. However, while the Indian board has ruled out playing a day-night Test when the Indian team tours Australia later this year, former skipper Sourav Ganguly on Thursday termed the pink-ball contest as the future of cricket which the country will have to embrace some day.

India is one of the only two current Test-playing nations to have avoided playing pink-ball cricket at the international level, with Bangladesh being the other. But Ganguly said the Indian team has the potential to win a day/night Test.

Speaking on the sidelines of a promotional event, the 45-year-old veteran was quoted saying, “Day/Night Test is the way forward. Every country has to play Day-Night Test. India has reservations but that’s a long-term future for Test cricket.”

“They (Indian side) are a good side, they will win D/N Test matches also. It’s just a different ball, I don’t think there’s any other difference. And they have such class players, they can win.”

Ganguly confident India can win without Kohli

Sourav Ganguly also opined that the present Indian side is good enough to beat Afghanistan minus Kohli. The Indian skipper will miss the fixture as he will be in the UK, plying his trade for county side Surrey.

It should also be noted that Kohli had a poor outing against England in the 2014 tour where he scored just 134 runs in 5 tests at an average of 13.4Kohli will be hoping a stint with Surrey stands him in good stead to inspire the tourists in a five-match series, which starts on August 1.

In the interim, Ajinkya Rahane has been bestowed with the captaincy reigns to lead the Test side against Afghanistan.
