On Sunday, Sri Lanka will be chasing to end two jinx – a 20 year wait for an ODI series win against India and their first ever series in any format against India in India. After a brilliant performance with the ball in favourable conditions in the first ODI, Sri Lankans were dominated by the brute force of Rohit Sharma, the stand-in captain. Rohit will take the field in Vishakhapatnam in a hope of making his maiden stint as an Indian captain a successful one.
Here we look at all the key stats and numbers ahead of the ODI series decider:
1 – Only once before India and Sri Lanka faced off in an ODI at the Vizag’s Dr YSR ACA-VDCA Stadium. In the 2007 ODI between the two sides at this venue, India chased down 259/7 in the 47-over game with six overs and seven wickets to spare. These two team also faced off in a T20I last year here which India won by eight wickets after bowling out the visiting side for 82.
2 – With his double century in the 2nd ODI, Rohit Sharma became only the 2nd player after Virender Sehwag to score a double ton in this format as a captain. Three other players scored double hundreds as captains in List A format.
2 – Vizag has been a host of two bilateral ODI deciders so far – India-Sri Lanka in 2007 and India-New Zealand in 2016. The home team won on both occasions comfortably. Vizag hosted the only completed game in India-Australia 2010 ODI series which India won and took the series as well.
86 – Rohit Sharma’s average in ODI format at Vizag the best among the players in this series. Rohit scored 172 runs in three ODI innings with two fifties at this venue. MS Dhoni averages 80 in Vizag as he scored 240 runs in four innings with a fifty and a 148 (venue highest).
142 – Rohit Sharma’s batting average in bilateral ODI series deciders is 75.17. He has an average of 142 while batting first in these games but only 8.33 while chasing.
3938 – Runs Shikhar Dhawan scored in the 94 innings he has batted in the ODI cricket so far. He needs 62 more runs for completing 4000 ODI runs. He will be the 6th quickest and the 2nd quickest among Indians after Virat Kohli if he scores those 62 runs in his next inning.
