The maiden Test match under floodlights in India will be played more than 22 years after the first-ever day/night first-class match it hosted. The final of the 1996/97 Ranji Trophy season was marked to be the first-ever day/night first-class fixture. Mumbai and Delhi clashed off in the game played at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior. Mumbai, who batted first, posted 630 with help of centuries from Jatin Paranjpe (111) and Amol Muzumdar (144).

Delhi began the final day on 365/2 and crossed 500-run mark with six wickets in hand as Ashu Dani (178) and Ajay Sharma (176) scored centuries by sharing a 312-run partnership. However, Mumbai took a 71-run first-innings lead to win the title by taking the last 6 wickets for just 53 runs. The match was played in coloured clothing and with the white ball only. The Pink ball made its entry in India during the CAB Super League final played between Mohun Bagan vs Bhowanipore in 2016.

The Eden Gardens hosted this game as well which featured Wriddhiman Saha and Mohammed Shami for the Mohun Bagan. Shami stood out as the player of the match for his 5-wicket haul. Later in the same year, Pink Ball made its debut in Indian first-class cricket during the Duleep Trophy which was played under the lights. The 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons of Duleep Trophy were also played in day/night format with a pink ball.
