Ishan Kishan played a blistering inning of 89 runs off just 56 deliveries, after being criticized for a slow strike rate in the West Indies series where Shreyas Iyer also smashed 57 runs off 28 balls to help India in posting a big total of 199/2, eventually winning the first T20I against Sri Lanka by 62 runs at Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. Skipper Rohit Sharma chipped in with a 32-ball 44 runs knock as well. He now has scored the most T20I runs after surpassing Martin Guptill’s tally of 3299 runs.

Speaking about how the first T20I panned out, Sri Lanka’s captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and opted to field first. India made as many as six changes from the last T20I against the Caribbean team with Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja marking their comebacks and Deepak Hooda making his T20I debut. Sanju Samson also got a place in the playing XI but he didn’t get the chance to bat. Openers Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan shared 111 runs partnership with Dushmantha Chameera and Chamika Karunaratne leaking 88 runs in eight overs between them without a wicket.

In reply to 200 runs target, the visitors got off to the worst possible start as Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled Pathum Nissanka on the very first ball of the chase. Charith Asalanka played a lone hand as he remained unbeaten on 53 runs. Chameera and Karunaratne played cameos of 24 and 21 runs respectively lower down the order with the hosts winning the encounter comfortably at the end. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Venkatesh Iyer took two wickets each in India’s convincing and clinical victory as the team took a 1-0 lead in the series. Ishan Kishan was declared the Player of the Match for his destructive knock of 89 runs.
