West Indies stunned India in the first game of the 3-match ODI series to take a 1-0 lead after chasing down the target of 288 on a slow track. India’s top three were deceived by the pace of the track before the fifties from Rishabh Pant (71) and Shreyas Iyer (70) powered India to 287/8.

After an early wicket, Shimron Hetmyer paired with Shai Hope to dominate the chase. The left-hander smashed 7 maximums and 11 fours on his way through to a 106-ball 139. The duo added 218 runs for the 2nd wicket in only 34.3 overs. Shai Hope anchored the chase with an unbeaten 151-ball 102 as the Caribbean team chased down the target with 13 balls to spare.

All the statistical highlights from West Indies’ 8-wicket victory in the Chennai ODI:

India’s losing streak at home; West Indies’ winning streak:

2005 – The last instance of India losing four straight ODI matches at home was back in 2005 during the 6-match series against Pakistan. India lost the last three ODIs of the 5-match series against Australia in March this year. These are the only two 4-match losing streaks in ODI format for India at home in the last 30 years.

2014 – The last instance of West Indies winning four successive ODI matches was in 2014 where they defeated Bangladesh by 3-0 margin in the home ODI series and beat India in the first ODI of the 2014 series in India.

A record effort by Hope-Hetmyer pair:

1 – Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope became the first pair of batsmen to score centuries in an ODI chase against India in India. Overall, this was the 3rd time that two players scored centuries during an ODI chase against India. The 2004 Adelaide ODI against Zimbabwe and the 2016 Perth ODI against Australia are the other two instances where India conceded two centuries while defending a total in ODI cricket.

218 – The 2nd wicket stand of 218 runs by Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer is now the biggest partnership for any pair in an ODI chase against India in India. The New Zealand pair of Tom Latham and Ross Taylor shared exactly 200 runs in the 2017 Mumbai ODI for the 4th wicket.

Overall, the 218-run stand is the 2nd biggest for any wicket in an ODI chase against India. The pair of George Bailey and Steve Smith added 242 for the 3rd wicket during the 2016 Perth ODI.

218 – The 218-run partnership between Hope and Hetmyer is the 2nd highest for West Indies in ODI cricket against India. Gordan Greenidge and Sir Viv Richards added 221 for the 2nd wicket in the 1983 Jamshedpur ODI.

This 218-run stand is also the highest for the West Indies for any wicket while chasing. The pair of Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Stuart Williams shared an unbeaten 200-run opening stand while chasing 200 in the 1997 Bridgetown ODI also against India.

Hetmyer’s record knock:

139 – Shimron Hetmyer’s 139-run knock is now the 5th highest individual score in an ODI chase against India in India. Hetmyer’s 139 is also the highest in an ODI chase against India in India since Andrew Strauss’ 158 in the 2011 World Cup.

Hope’s slow ton:

149 – Shai Hope reached his century in 149 balls in the Chennai ODI. Only one player required more balls for his ODI hundred while playing for West Indies. Gordon Greenidge scored three ODI hundreds by taking more than 150 balls.

2011 – Shai Hope’s 149-ball ton is the slowest by any player in ODI cricket since the start of 2011. This is the slowest ODI hundred since the 151-ball hundred by Tom Cooper for the Netherlands in 2010 against Afghanistan.

A dry game for the spinners:

33 – As many as 33 overs were bowled by the spinners in this match without taking a wicket. These are the most number of overs by the spin bowlers without a wicket in an ODI on Indian soil. The previous most was 29.1 overs during the 2001 Pune ODI between India and Australia.

21 – Indian spinners bowled as many as 21 overs without taking a wicket in this match. These are the most the Indian spinners bowled without taking a wicket in a home ODI since the 2007 Kochi ODI against Australia. The spin bowlers of the Indian team bowled 21 overs during that match as well.
