The Indian players underwent the yo-yo fitness test ahead of their tour to the United Kingdom on Friday even as the Test team thrashed the debutants Afghanistan in Bengaluru. They are scheduled to play 2 T20Is against Ireland after which they will lock horns against England across all the three formats. However, the key player of the team is set to be dropped from the team as he failed the fitness test which is again a jolt for the Men in Blue.
Earlier in the day, Siddarth Kaul confirmed with an update on his official Twitter handle that he has cleared the fitness test and was excited about the upcoming tour. Moreover, it was also known that Suresh Raina and Jasprit Bumrah were also set for one of the toughest tours of this year.
Who failed the fitness test?
Ambati Rayudu has failed the yo-yo fitness test as his final score came well below 16.1 which is the benchmark. His score was in the range of 14 according to the reports in Sportskeeda. He is the only player in the squad to have failed the test and is set to be dropped now. Even the skipper Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni were cleared fit. Rayudu had made a comeback in the ODI set up of the team for England tour courtesy of sensational form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) but will have to wait for more chances now.
Rayudu was crucial to India’s experiment at number 4 and he had a great chance to seal his spot for the World Cup next year in England. But, as it stands now, it seems tough for him as he will have to get his fitness in line before making breaking into the national side again. The selectors have not named the replacement yet but Ajinkya Rahane is the best option currently in front of them.
