The Indian selection panel chaired by former wicketkeeper-batsman MSK Prasad was scheduled to be held today in Mumbai. The selectors were not only supposed to pick Team India for the ODI and T20I series against England but also appoint a new skipper since MS Dhoni stepped down from the limited-overs captain’s position a couple of days ago. But the meeting that was to start at 12:30 pm IST hasn’t started until 2:30 pm.

Reports suggest that there is a lot of confusion over the eligibility of the selectors after the Supreme Court of India’s verdict on January 2 where they sacked president Anurag Thakur and Ajay Shirke for not falling in line with the Lodha Committee’s recommendations. The apex court had asked the senior most vice-president of the BCCI to chair board meetings until it appointed the administrators.

Now, the secretary of the board is supposed to be the convener of the selection meetings and since a replacement hasn’t been named the BCCI had asked joint secretary Amitabh Choudhary to convene the meeting but the Lodha panel once again opposing the board’s decision suggested that Chief Executive Officer Rahul Johri should instead be the convener.

Also per the Lodha panel, only Test cricketers should be a part of the national selection committee. HT reporter Sanjjeev who is covering the meeting tweeted that the BCCI spokesperson has referred to logistical reasons for the delay. The spokesperson was also quoted saying that two of the selectors Jatin Paranjape and Devang Gandhi were yet to arrive for the meeting and that the fitness report wasn’t received either.

There still is a lot of uncertainty about the reason for the delay but more than anything the meeting is already a couple of hours off schedule.
