The much-awaited mega auctions of the Indian Premier League (IPL) commenced in Bengaluru as the franchises looked set to overhaul their squads. All the eight teams were keen to bag the T20 specialists and they went all out to procure the services of a particular player. While there were some surprises dished out by the owners of the teams, some buys or Right to Match  (RTM) cards used by them were on the obvious notes. However, Ben Stokes once again proved to be the most expensive player of the auction and is likely to take the honours this year as well.

England all-rounder bagged an enormous amounth of Rs. 12.5 Crores and was snapped up by Rajasthan Royals who replicated the squad similar to what Rising Pune Supergiant possessed last year. Amongst the Indian cricketers, KL Rahul and Manish Pandey were in the business as Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab bought them for Rs. 11 Crores which is staggering. Australian trio of Chris Lynn, Mitchell Starc and Glenn Maxwell also grabbed the eyeballs of everyone as they were one of the top buys on the first day of the auctions.

Even Kedar Jadhav was one of the hot picks by Chennai Super Kings who looted a gigantic amount of Rs 7.8 Crores for him. While they managed to secure the services the Harbhajan Singh, it was tough for them to go for R Ashwin who attracted a lot of bids.

Use of RTM cards

All the franchises made the use of Right to Match cards exceptionally well and secured their favourite players whom they were not able to retain. While it was obvious that SRH were going to use the card for Rashid Khan, Delhi Daredevils caught everyone off-guard by retaining Mohammed Shami who took the sensational five-wicket haul against South Africa later in the day probably celebrating the retention by his franchise.

However, the most surprising buy of the day using RTM card was Piyush Chawla. Kolkata Knight Riders stunningly decided not let him go off, the possibility no cricket pundit or analyst had seen coming. They bought him for a decent amount of Rs. 4.2 Crores and would expect him to make a difference in the upcoming season.

The most talked about were the uncapped Indian players for whom the teams were eager to pick in their side. Amongst them, it was Krunal Pandya who shone and Mumbai Indians undoubtedly were going to use RTM for him who also retained Kieron Pollard using the same facility.

In the end, a total of 78 players were sold on the first day of the auction out of which 29 were the overseas cricketers. The second day is expected to bring more surprises as the unsold players will also come into the picture with their base price cut to half.
