It was the last game of the league stages and Kolkata had to defend 176 runs to finish in the top two. Everything was going well for them at the Eden Gardens with Mumbai Indians needing 21 runs off the last over. Lakshmipathy Balaji was given the ball by Gautam Gambhir and much to his disappointment, he conceded four boundaries off the first four balls thanks to James Franklin’s brilliance.

Franklin could only salvage a single off the penultimate ball and the Mumbai Indians needed 4 runs to silence the Eden Gardens. Ambati Rayudu was on strike with all possible protection handed to Balaji. Yet, he bowled a full toss and Rayudu spanked that for a six over square leg. Kolkata qualified to the next stages but failed to finish in the first two positions, which averted them an extra chance in the playoffs.
