The bowlers of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have been found wanting when batsmen have gone after them. Their bowling hasn’t been penetrative enough to dictate terms to the opponents. The franchise now faces the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The Yellow Army has been in thunderous form and won’t be an easy proposition for the Knights.
Meanwhile, Sir Vivian Richards have lauded both MS Dhoni and Dinesh Karthik for the approach they have employed thus far. “There is no doubt that MS Dhoni has been unstoppable this season, but Dinesh Karthik has brought something new to the table by putting abundant faith in his young bowlers,” Vivian Richards wrote in his column for the Times of India (TOI).
The challenge that lies ahead for KKR
The former Windies cricketer also praised the KKR skipper for restoring faith on Shivam Mavi, despite his poor show against the Delhi Daredevils. “Showing confidence and mentoring youngsters seems to be the No 1 agenda in Karthik’s scheme of things. KKR’s Shivam Mavi went for a lot of runs against Punjab but Karthik played Mavi in the next match and the bowler justified the faith shown on him,” he added.
Moreover, Richards has also been awestruck by Sunil Narine’s blitz at the top of the order, so much so, that it reminded him of Sanath Jayasuriya, the former Sri Lankan cricketer. The 66-year old veteran is also looking forward to the tactics Karthik’s bowlers use against the might of Chennai who are currently placed in the top position.
“Another factor that works for Kolkata is Sunil Narine’s role as an opener. It reminds me of [Sanath] Jayasuriya during his hey days. Both teams have a well-rounded squad that knows when to step up, but it will be interesting to see what the boys do on their given day,” Richards mentioned.
