Kings XI Punjab picked up Karnataka mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy for a whopping 8.4 crores at the IPL 2019 auction. The stakes were high and he was expected to be worth it after all he brought the mystery element with his bowling. However, at the halfway mark in the tournament Varun has played just one game so far and is now set to be away from the action due to an injury.
Kings XI Punjab franchise reported that the spinner fractured his finger when they visited Chennai to play the hosts Chennai Super Kings on April 6. The 27-year-old got his debut game against Kolkata Knight Riders at the spin conducive Eden Gardens. It was a forgettable game for him as his three overs cost the team 35 runs while he accounted for a wicket.
KXIP hoping for his quick return
Varun’s injury has kept him on the sidelines since. The team management was hoping that he would feature in most matches given the fact that the pitches have assisted the slower bowlers. They are now expecting him to recover soon and return to action as the team heads into the business end of the tournament.
“It’s unfortunate that Varun picked up the injury,” said KXIP CEO Satish Menon. “But these things happen in cricket. We have great faith in his abilities and we can only hope that he recovers soon,” he was quoted as saying by KXIP.in.
Kings will later in the day take on Rajasthan Royals in their 9th match. The Ravichandran Ashwin led side has 8 points after as many matches and are coming here on the back of a defeat at the hands of cellar dwellers Royal Challengers Bangalore. To improve their chances of making it to the top four, KXIP now need to fasten the seat belt and register straight wins as the competition is only getting tougher.
