The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) had lost three matches in a row in this edition’s Indian Premier League (IPL). However, the team, captained by Kane Williamson, raced to a stupendous victory by six wickets with 19 balls to spare against table-toppers Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. With the thumping triumph, the Sunrisers moved to fifth place on the points table.

CSK huffed and puffed to a respectable score

The Super Kings’ batsmen could only take their team to a moderate score of 132 for five in 20 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat first. Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis cobbled together an opening stand of 79 runs off 59 deliveries. Shahbaz Nadeem gave SRH their first breakthrough, dismissing Watson, who strained to 31 from 29. In the very next over, Vijay Shankar got rid of Du Plessis.

The Proteas batter raced off to 45 from 31 with three fours and as many over-boundaries. In the 14th over, Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan accounted for the wickets of Suresh Raina and Kedar Jadhav for 13 and one respectively. In the second half of their innings, the Super Kings couldn’t get going as the likes of Ambati Rayudu and Ravindra Jadeja scored only 31 runs for the sixth wicket off 32 balls.

The Sunrisers register a thumping victory

The SRH batsmen started their run-chase without nurturing any inhibitions on a strip, which wasn’t the best for batting. Jonny Bairstow and David Warner took the CSK bowling by the scruff of its neck and scored 66 for the opening wicket in a mere 34 balls. Deepak Chahar separated the duo, nipping out Warner, who ended with a 25-ball 50. By then, the home team was already on the driver’s seat.

Bairstow carried on and went on in his own merry way. Imran Tahir bowled beautifully and he finished with a spell of 4-0-20-0. The South African spinner got rid of Kane Williamson and Shankar, but he didn’t get much support from his fellow CSK bowlers. Bairstow notched his half-century in 39 and he stayed not out until the very end. The Englishman scored 61 from 44 with three fours and as many sixes.

Suresh Raina, the CSK captain, said

I think it is a very good wake up call. I think we didn’t put a decent score on the board and kept losing wickets. Faf and Watson gave us a good start but we could not capitalize. We lost too many wickets in between and that’s why it cost us the game. We should have looked for partnerships and should have rotated our strike better. Hence, we were 30 runs short. He (MS Dhoni) is feeling better. His back was stiff. Probably he will play in the next game against RCB. He (Imran Tahir) has been giving us breakthroughs. You just throw the ball to him and he delivers. He has been bowling really well. As long as senior players are there, you just need to do well as a unit.

Kane Williamson, the SRH captain, said

Very good performance all-round. Obviously CSK started really well with the bat and we couldn’t take early wickets, but we played really well in the back half and we took our chances in the field as well. We always need to adapt to the wicket, and we’ll look to build on this performance. Rashid has been an outstanding performer for us over the years and on such surfaces he is a big threat for the opposition. Now every game is different and we need to do the same for our next one. Warner’s was a match-winning knock along with Jonny. We weren’t quite ourselves in the last few matches and we wanted to come back to doing what we’ve always done well.

Jonny Bairstow said

Was very pleased to be there till the end. Someone from the top four needed to be there and I am really happy I was the one. I think it’s handy to have a right hand – left hand combination. We (Warner and himself) complement each other really well. I think we got a very good team. Today our bowlers did well to restrict them in the last 11 or 12 overs, they’re improving in every game. It’s a pleasure to play here, in front of these fans with the Orange Army behind us. We were a bit ruthless today. It’s a pleasure to keep against (Rashid Khan). It’s also challenging to face him in the nets.

David Warner, the Player of the Match, said

Great support, even though there is plenty of yellow they are a fantastic crowd. Some times in our chases we have been a bit hesitant and that’s why I tried to bat 20 overs. Against the Kings, I thought the wicket was a bit tough. Credit to Jonny, we complement each other really well. I have two beautiful children, one more on the way, and a beautiful wide and I can’t thank them enough. I have fantastic support from over the world and it has been overwhelming here in India.
