The Delhi Capitals (DC) have managed to climb to the second place with a comprehensive win over the Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Feroz Shah Kotla stadium. They would now want the Mumbai Indians (MI) to lose their game against KKR on Sunday to stay in the top two. If MI wins the game, DC will come to the third position as the former’s net run-rate is superior.

As far as the match is concerned, it never felt is the Royals were playing. Steve Smith‘s departure had weakened their batting considerably and despite opting to bat first after winning the toss, they faltered. The skipper Ajinkya Rahane got out early and even his opening partner Liam Livingstone was sent back early. Both the batsmen were snaffled by Ishant Sharma with some brilliant variations.

Sanju Samson running himself out didn’t help either and soon the visitors were staring down the barrel at 30/4 in the sixth over. Shreyas Gopal had to bat six with the lack of depth and he played cautiously along with Riyan Parag who showed excellent composure. Royals were soon reduced to 65/7 and then 95/8, but Parag made sure that the team played the whole of 20 overs.

In the process, he also became the youngest to score a half-century in the IPL and got out only off the last ball of the final over on 50 off 49 balls. The Royals posted 115/9 after 20 overs, the total which looked distant at one stage.

Tricky chase made easy by Pant

The DC needed to gun down the target quickly to better their net run-rate in order to seal their place in the top two. But the pitch wasn’t easy by any means and the Men in Pink had stacked their line-up with as many as four spinners including Parag. Shreyas Gopal and Ish Sodhi bowled superbly to control the run-flow. Even Krishnappa Gowtham didn’t disappoint.

But Rishabh Pant played with extreme patience at the start and after settling in, opened himself up to gun down the runs quite easily in the end. He remained unbeaten on 53 off just 38 and finished the game with a couple of massive sixes with more than three overs to spare. DC won the game by five wickets as the other batters struggled to go past even 16.
