Clinching their fifth title, the Mumbai Indians managed to defend the title and became the only team after Chennai Super Kings (2010, 2011) to achieve the feat.

After an engrossing run of 59 fixtures, the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) found the two best teams. The table-toppers Mumbai Indians (MI) met the Delhi Capitals for the titular battle at the Dubai International Stadium. While Rohit Sharma’s unit was in search of their fifth title, Shreyas Iyer’s brigade was looking for their maiden trophy.

After winning the toss, skipper Iyer decided to go ahead with the runs-on-the-board template as he invited MI to field. Striking right at the onset, Trent Boult’s dismissed Marcus Stoinis on the very first ball of the final. The Capitals were pushed into deeper trouble in no time as Boult struck again in the second over his spell to dismiss Ajinkya Rahane, whereas spinner Jayant Yadav got rid of the potential Orange Cap contender Shikhar Dhawan.

Three down in the powerplay with barely anything on the board, Capitals had all their hopes relying on skipper Shreyas Iyer and a rather out-of-form Rishabh Pant. Rising to the occasion, the duo added 96 runs in 69 balls, and their half-centuries guided their team to a moderate total of 156.

With the likes of Rohit Sharma, Quinton de Kock, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, and Hardik Pandya in their ranks, the target was never going to be a task. To push themselves into the game, Delhi had to perform exceptionally with the ball. However, the openers Sharma and de Kock made the opponents submit in front of their might and added 45 runs within a blink of an eye.

Building further on the solid foundation, Ishan Kishan joined skipper Sharma in the middle after the dismissals of de Kock and Suryakumar Yadav, who sacrificed his wicket during a mix-up while taking a single on the call of Rohit Sharma. Despite the breakthrough, the Capitals failed to contain MI, and the latter went on to chase the target without breaking a sweat.

Clinching their fifth title, the Mumbai Indians, rather deservedly, managed to defend the title and became the only team after Chennai Super Kings (2010, 2011) to achieve the feat. Leading from the front with the ball, Trent Boult delivered a Man of the Match performance.
