Two teams that have won 7 IPL titles between them will clash against each other in Match 5 of the 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Mumbai Indians (MI) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will enter the match after experiencing contrasting fortunes in their previous encounters.

The Mumbai Indians (MI) started their 2021 IPL campaign on a losing note, against the Virat Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) side. Even though the match was decided only off the last ball, the Bangalore outfit managed to cross the finish line against the Rohit Sharma led side.

But then, the Mumbai side need not be too worried about a loss in their opening game, as the Bangalore side owes its victory against Mumbai mainly to the exploits of two men. While Harshal Patel sliced through the Mumbai batting lineup and scalped 5 wickets to restrict them to a total of 159/9, Ab De Villiers’ blazing 27-ball 48 with the willow allowed the Bangalore side to romp home in a thriller.

On the other hand, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) managed to beat the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) side in a high-scoring affair in Chennai. Nitish Rana was the catalyst of Kolkata’s victory with the willow. The left-hander scored 80 off just 56 deliveries to allow the Eoin Morgan led side to post a competitive total of 187/6 on the board. In reply, even though the ‘Orange Army’ gave some jitters to the Kolkata side, they eventually fell short of the target by 10 runs.

The Mumbai Indians are known to be slow starters, but once they find their mojo, it will be tough to stop them. While the Mumbai Indians (MI) will be looking to post their first victory of IPL 2021, the Kolkata outfit will be looking to continue with their good form. So, who will triumph in the battle of the IPL behemoths?

Pitch and Conditions

The pitch at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai will be one where there will be a balance between bat and ball. While the willow wielders will have to apply themselves on this surface to score runs, the spinners will also come into play. The boundaries in Chennai are slightly on the bigger side as well.

Playing Combinations for KKR vs MI

Kolkata Knight Riders

The Kolkata Knight Riders will go in with the same side that took the field against SRH. They would not like to tinker with their winning combination.

Predicted Playing XI: Nitish Rana, Shubman Gill, Rahul Tripathi, Andre Russell, Eoin Morgan (C), Dinesh Karthik (WK), Shakib Al Hasan, Pat Cummins, Harbhajan Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Varun Chakravarthy.

Mumbai Indians

After just a single loss, it is unlikely that the Mumbai side will indulge in too much of chop and change. They too will most likely go in with the same side that took the field against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the opening match of IPL 2021.

Predicted Playing XI: Chris Lynn/Quinton De Kock, Rohit Sharma (C), Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan (WK), Hardik Pandya, Kieron Pollard, Krunal Pandya, Marcon Jansen, Rahul Chahar, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult.
