Mumbai Indians have stormed their way to the fifth spot in the points table in the 2021 Indian Premier League. On Tuesday, October 5, Rohit Sharma and Co. defeated the Rajasthan Royals by eight wickets at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. But their net run rate remained below fourth-placed Kolkata Knight Riders. As far as RR are concerned, they need a miracle to qualify for the playoffs.

RR struggle after good start

After being put in to bat first, the Royals got off to a brisk start as Evin Lewis and Yashasvi Jaiswal scored at a rate of 10 runs per over in the first two overs. But once they got out in a space of 11 balls, the Royals were restricted to 90 in 20 overs. Lewis looked fluent in his 19-ball 24 before pacer Jasprit Bumrah trapped in front. Prior to that Nathan Coulter-Nile found Jaiswal’s outside edge.

Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube and Glenn Phillips couldn’t into double figures. David Miller and Rahul Tewatia scored 15 and 12 respectively, but couldn’t carry on. Coulter-Nile was the standout bowler for MI as he picked up four wickets and had an economy of 3.50. James Neesham also accounted for three wickets. Bumrah got three scalps even as Jayant Yadav and Trent Boult went wicketless.

Ishan Kishan shines

Chasing the modest score, MI got off to a blistering start as they scored 56 runs in the powerplay. Rohit was in no mood to die wondering as he made a 13-ball 22 before Chetan Sakariya got rid of him. He also got a reprieve when Samson missed a stumping chance off Shreyas Gopal. Suryakumar Yadav looked promising, smashing three fours, but he perished to the wily Mustafizur Rahman.

Ishan Kishan, who came back into the eleven, played some sparkling strokes. The left-hander didn’t seem low in confidence as he took advantage of the fielding restrictions. He stayed unbeaten on a 25-ball 50, laced with five fours and three sixes. Kishan’s power-packed knock meant that MI chased the target down in 12.2 overs with 70 balls left. MI played like a five-time champion and showed their class.
