Rajasthan Royals (RR) managed to beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in a group stage encounter of IPL as the batting order of the Red Army failed to score runs yet again. RR bowlers were right on the money as they managed to defend 144 runs with their excellent bowling performance.

RCB skipper Faf du Plessis won the toss and opted to field first. The Red Army pacers had some immediate success as they knocked out both the openers Devdutt Padikkal and man in form Jos Buttler. Despite wickets falling, RR did not put off their foot from the pedal as they continued to score runs at a brisk pace.

Ravichandran Ashwin (17 off 9) and skipper Sanju Samson (27 off 21) played a few shots but ended up throwing away their wickets. Kiwi batter Daryl Mitchell (16 off 24) was struggling at one end. However, Riyan Parag (56 off 31) was going strong at one end and he remained unbeaten after ensuring that his side cross the 140-run mark.

For RCB, Mohammed Siraj, Josh Hazlewood, and Wanindu Hasaranga scalped two wickets each. Pacer Harshal Patel also got one wicket, but he was a touch expensive in his spell giving runs at an economy of 8.2.

RR bowlers kept taking wickets at regular intervals

Chasing 145 to win, RCB batters were struggling from ball one. Former skipper Virat Kohli was the first one to go as his bad form continued. To make things worse, skipper Du Plessis and Australian batter Glenn Maxwell got out on a score of 37 just after the field restrictions.

RR bowlers kept bowling tight lines and soon they got their rewards as well with Rajat Patidar and Suyash Prabhudessai being sent back by senior spinner Ravi Ashwin. None of the other RCB batters including Dinesh Karthik, Shahbaz, and Hasaranga among others could manage to win the match for their franchise.

After winning tonight’s encounter, RR climbed to the top of the points table. Meanwhile, RCB has lost two matches on the trot and is placed fifth on the points table. Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad, and Lucknow Super Giants are the other top three teams in the points table.
