There was a change of opening combination for India for their second game in the Super 12 round of the T20 World Cup 2021. KL Rahul came out to bat with Ishan Kishan. That happened after New Zealand won the toss and elected to field first. Something similar happened against Pakistan and the script of India’s poor batting was similar as well.

Kishan got out in the third over of the match for just four runs. Rohit Sharma came out to bat at no. 3 and along with Rahul, he was putting on a recovery. However, that didn’t last for too long. In the last over of the powerplay, Rahul went for a biggie on the leg side and ended up losing his wicket.

During his knock, Rahul scored three fours and was looking in a good mood with the bat before he was dismissed. One of those three fours was a bit streaky and came in the same over when he got out. It was a bit unfortunate and his dismissal came at the wrong time. Tim Southee bowled a very smart delivery, pulling his length back slightly.

Tim Southee’s slower short ball gets the better off KL Rahul

Rahul went for a big heave on the leg side. The ball wasn’t a full pace delivery as Southee had rolled his fingers on it. The ball was short as well and Rahul, who is an excellent puller of the ball, thought he might get it over the fielder who was stationed somewhere between the fine leg and long leg position. The ball landed on the hands of Daryl Mitchell who was perfectly placed.

Rahul’s innings ended on 18 runs from 16 balls. India’s score at the time was 35 for 2 at the end of the powerplay. After some time, they were reduced to 48 for 4, when Rohit Sharma got out for 14 while Virat Kohli too got out soon after for 9. At the time of writing this, 16 overs were done and India’s score was 78 for 5. Rishabh Pant was dismissed for 12 while Hardik Pandya, who was batting on 14 runs, was joined by Ravindra Jadeja. A loss against New Zealand could potentially knock India out of the tournament.
