The Punjab Kings finally managed to ace the run chase in the 14th edition of the IPL. The KL Rahul-led side did not buckle under pressure (like they had done for a majority of the tournament) and thumped the Kolkata Knight Riders side with 5 wickets and 3 balls to spare.
Chasing a target of 166, the Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) openers started the run chase in scintillating fashion. The duo of KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal put on a splendid 70-run partnership off 8.5 overs to set the tone for the chase. Agarwal was the first man to depart and was dismissed by Varun Chakravarthy for a blazing 40.
Nicholas Pooran was the next man to be dismissed. The left-hander went for the big shot off the bowling of Varun Chakravarthy, but holed out to the fielder at deep cover, and departed for a 7-ball 12.
Aiden Markram then hit Sunil Narine straight to Shubman Gill, who took a simple catch at deep cover and walked back for 18. Deepak Hooda was hoodwinked by a slower delivery from Shivam Mavi and was dismissed for just 3. KL Rahul was then dismissed for a 55-ball 67 by Venkatesh Iyer. But then, Shah Rukh Khan scored a blazing 22* off 9 deliveries to seal the match for the Punjab outfit.
Varun Chakravarthy was the pick of the bowlers for the Eoin Morgan-led side. The right-arm spinner scalped 2 wickets in his quota of 4 overs, and leaked only 24 runs as well. Apart from Chakravarthy, the likes of Sunil Narine, Shivam Mavi, and Venkatesh Iyer scalped a wicket each.
Venkatesh Iyer’s classy 67 helps KKR post a total of 165/7
In an innings that was a combination of flamboyance and ruthlessness, Venkatesh Iyer carted the Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) bowlers to all parts of the ground. Iyer cut, flicked, and drove with grace, and scored a masterly 67 off 49 deliveries to help the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) post a total of 165/7 on the board.
Apart from Iyer, the likes of Rahul Tripathi and Nitish Rana contributed vital runs to the KKR total as well. While Tripathi scored a 26-ball 34, Rana scored a quickfire 31 off just 18 deliveries. On the bowling front, Arshdeep Singh was the pick of the bowlers for the Punjab side.
In the 4 overs that he bowled, Singh picked up 3 wickets and gave away 32 runs in the process. Apart from Singh, Ravi Bishnoi scalped a couple of wickets as well. With this victory, the Punjab side has moved to 5th place in the points table, while the Kolkata side is stationed at the 4th spot.
