Harshal Patel running wildly in unbridled happiness, and Virat Kohli jumping up in ecstasy were the dominating scenes of the 39th match of the IPL between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Even though Patel’s hat trick hogged the spotlight, it was an all-round performance by the Virat Kohli-led side that allowed them to crush the Rohit Sharma-led side by 54 runs.

Chasing a target of 166, the Mumbai Indians’ openers Rohit Sharma and Quinton De Kock set the tone for the chase with a 57-run stand off 6.4 overs. But then, after that confident opening partnership, the Mumbai side completely lost its way and kept losing wickets at regular intervals.

Quinton De Kock was the first man to depart, after scoring a sedate 23-ball 24. The ‘Hitman’ was in good form and plundered his way to 43 off 28 deliveries. But just when it seemed as if Sharma would create panic in the opposition camp, the MI skipper hit Glenn Maxwell straight to Devdutt Padikkal.

Ishan Kishan tried to go for a wild slog through the leg side, but ended up giving a ‘dolly’ of a catch to Harshal Patel at short third man and walked back for 9 runs. Krunal Pandya failed to get going too and departed after scratching his way to an 11-ball 5.

Suryakumar Yadav’s poor run in the tournament continued and he was dismissed for 8. Hardik Pandya’s return ended on a disappointing note, and the right-hander could contribute just 3 runs to the total. Kieron Pollard too walked back after mustering just 7 runs, and that was the final nail in the coffin for the five-time IPL champions.

For RCB, Harshal Patel was the cynosure of all eyes with the ball. The right arm pace bowler scalped 4 wickets in his 3.1 overs and leaked only 17 runs. Yuzvendra Chahal too, scalped 3 wickets in his 4 over spell to bamboozle the MI side.

For the RCB side, Devdutt Padikkal departed without troubling the scorers. But then, that did not affect the Bangalore side, as Virat Kohli and Srikar Bharat put on an excellent 68-run stand for the 2nd wicket. While Bharat scored 32 off 24 deliveries, the legendary Kohli helped himself to a 42-ball 51.

And then, Glenn Maxwell played some breath-taking shots to stun the Mumbai Indians’ (MI) bowling attack. The Aussie is supposed to be a right-hander, but he switched to being a left-handed batsman with ridiculous ease and decimated the Rohit Sharma-led side. Maxwell scored 56 off just 37 deliveries to power the RCB side to a competitive total of 165/6.

Jasprit Bumrah scalped 3 wickets for the MI side with the ball, and also gave away 36 runs in his quota of 4 overs. Also, Trent Boult, Adam Milne, and Rahul Chahar chipped in with a wicket each. With this victory, the RCB side is placed at the 3rd spot in the IPL points table, while the Mumbai side is stationed at the 7th place.

Chennai Super Kings beat Kolkata Knight Riders in a thriller

In the afternoon match, the Chennai Super Kings and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) played out a humdinger of a contest that was decided off the very last ball of the match. The KKR side batted first and posted a competitive total of 171/6 in 20 overs.

And, the two men who took the attack to the CSK bowlers and contributed crucial runs to the team total were Rahul Tripathi and Nitish Rana. While Tripathi scored a 33-ball 45, Rana scored 37* off 27 deliveries. Dinesh Karthik also chipped in with a handy 11-ball 26 lower down the order as well.

On the bowling front, Shardul Thakur was outstanding with the ball. In the 4 overs that he bowled, the right arm pacer gave away just 20 runs and also picked up a couple of wickets as well. Josh Hazlewood also chipped in with 2 wickets.

In reply, the CSK openers put on an excellent 74-run partnership. While Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 40 off 28 deliveries, Faf du Plessis scored a 30-ball 43. CSK then lost some quick wickets, but Ravindra Jadeja stepped up and scored a vital 8-ball 22 to seal the match for the CSK side.

Sunil Narine was the pick of the bowlers for the KKR side. The West Indian bowled 4 overs, gave away 41 runs, and picked up 3 wickets in the process. With this victory, the CSK side has moved to the top position in the IPL points table, while the KKR side is occupying the 4th place.
