It sometimes helps bring about the desired result, But there are instance where sledging has terribly backfired as well.

Instead of unnerving the victim sometimes sledging emboldens and motivates the opponent. Here is a classic example of one such incident. This famous and hilarious incident happened in the 2010/11 Ashes series in Perth.
