Matthew Wade made his comeback into the Test squad after almost a couple of years. Wade was selected as the backup keeper to skipper Tim Paine for the 2019 Ashes versus England. His selection raised a lot of eyebrows as a number of former Australian selectors reckoned that southpaw Alex Carey should’ve been selected because of his sterling shows in the 2019 World Cup.

Wade broke into the eleven as well for the opening Test at the Edgbaston in Birmingham. But he couldn’t make an impact and perished for a single in the first innings, trapped by Chris Woakes. Even as Paine is shouldering the mantle behind the stumps, Wade has been entrusted to be an outfielder. However, on the second day’s play, Wade sprung a massive surprise and came on to bowl.

Matthew Wade turns a bowler in Birmingham

He was handed over the ball in the 76th over in order to break the ominous-looking partnership between Rory Burns, the centurion, and Ben Stokes. Bowling medium pace, he conceded a humungous wide and gave away seven runs in the solitary over he bowled. Wade isn’t even a part-time bowler in domestic cricket, having bowled only 346 balls, picking up eight wickets.

In the meantime, Wade had a connection with England speedster Jofra Archer. Back in 2012, the Barbados-born Archer dropped a tweet on Wade, expressing his shock over the keeper’s actions. It added to the plethora of Archer’s prediction tweets over the past few months. He took to Twitter and wrote, “What is Matthew wade doing !?!”

Jofra Archer has been in the limelight before as well for his tweets. He had also tweeted about the World Cup final going into the super over once and ironically he himself was bowling for England in the super over against New Zealand and fittingly won them the crown.
