Former Indian skipper Kapil Dev has come out in defense of the aggressive nature of the current Indian skipper Virat Kohli. Team India is having a dream run under Virat Kohli’s leadership. They recently thumped the South African side in their own backyard to register historic ODI and T20I series win. A lot of credit was given to the way Kohli played and the way he led the team with aggression.
While many found his aggression to be fuelling the Indian side, some thought that the aggression was uncalled for. Former Australia captain Steve Waugh had remarked that Kohli’s aggression was a little ‘over the top’. He felt that it was not really needed in the context of the game.
And now, as per the quotes in FirstPost, Kapil Dev has responded to the remarks made by Waugh. He noted that everyone has their own opinion. He rightly cited that it all boils down to what works for an individual. For Kohli, it is all about aggression. For MS Dhoni, it was all about staying calm.
“I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Steve has his opinion. I’m not going to respond to that. I feel as long as success is coming to the team, that’s good enough. Basically, our nation is a very soft nation. Virat is one of the few who has come out and changed the thought process. In fact, it was Sourav Ganguly who started changing our thought process. And then we had MS Dhoni, who was a totally different person. He was calm and quiet. So it’s what works for you,” Kapil Dev remarked.
Success is more important
Speaking further on the same note, Kapil Dev mentioned that in the end what counts is the end result. If Kohli is getting results that way, then there should not be anything to worry about. Also, with time, even Kohli will ease out and get more relaxed on the field.
“As long as success is coming on the field, that’s more important. I think Virat (Kohli) will mellow down as time passes. If not, that’s his decision. He’s always been like this ever since I saw him in his U-19 days,” he mentioned further.
