The coveted IPL has often witnessed blazing starts from batting teams as they look to gain maximum advantage during the powerplay overs. However, there have been instances where teams have failed to fire under pressure, leading to the unwanted record of the lowest powerplay scores in the league’s history.
Notably, a franchise’s performance in the first six overs usually sets the tone for the rest of the innings. While aggressive batting upfront has become the norm, tricky pitch conditions, disciplined bowling, and early wickets have, at times, resulted in teams posting shockingly low scores in the powerplay stage.
The lowest powerplay score (2 runs) was recorded by Royal Challengers Bengaluru; however, this might seem unfair as the match was called off shortly after RCB had just begun their innings against Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils) in the IPL 2015 season. The lowest powerplay score (13 runs) was posted by Delhi Capitals (CSK) against RCB in IPL 2026, while the record for the second-lowest score (14 runs) in the powerplay belongs jointly Rajasthan Royals (RR) and to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and, with SRH setting the record IPL 2022 and RR way back in 2009.
Over the years, franchises have faced tough challenges, with some struggling to even cross double digits in the powerplay. Whether due to swing-friendly conditions, accurate bowling, or poor shot selection, these low scores serve as a reminder of how unpredictable T20 cricket can be.
