This Monday was an emotional one for the ODI Skipper of the Bangladesh Team. It was during the book launch of his biography written by sports journalist and writer Debabrata Mukherjee. The tribulations and the journey on how he became one of the best cricketers of Bangladesh history are the main highlights of this book.

Mashrafe Bin Mortaza was born in Narail in Bangladesh. He was interested in cricket from a very early age and ironically it was his batting which got him into cricket in his early days. It his bowling these days that has gained him respect and accolades and got him the nickname ‘Narail Express’.  It was then under the Bangladesh bowling Coach Andy Roberts, he got drafted into the Bangladesh A Team. It was in late 2001, he broke into the national team and from then on there has been no looking back for this speedster who has played in 36 Tests, 160 One-Dayers and 35 T20s so far and is also now the ODI Skipper of Bangladesh.

The first book written on his life was released in Khulna at the team hotel where both the Bangladesh squad and the touring Zimbabwe squad marked their presence on this wonderful occasion. A ‘unique’ press conference was the highlight of the programme where Mashrafe’s teammates fired an array of questions at their captain. In one of the questions by Imrul Kayes, he expressed his desire to write his own autobiography. He advised young cricketers from his side to take inspiration from his life on how to overcome struggles and injuries on a way to become a great cricketer. Mahmudullah portrayed an intriguing story going back to 2009 after Mashrafe assumed control as the captain of the Bangladesh cricket group. Mahmudullah reviewed how Mashrafe gave over an envelope to each of the players containing motivational messages and saying the group’s expectations from them.

National Team Coach Chandika Hathurusingha got on to the stage and jokingly remarked: “Mashrafe is so popular in Bangladesh that if he wants, he can join politics.” He also said that even if Mortaza is injured he does manage to give his 200% while playing and this inspires in the entire team to play even better. Mashrafe, in the end, turned very emotional and expressed gratitude for the respect he deserved.
