34-year old former captain of the Netherlands cricket team Peter Borren has called it quits from international cricket. Borren, who had been leading the Dutch side for the past few years has been one of the most successful captains of the Associate Nation. Having taken over the captaincy all those years ago in 2009, Borren has played in 37 T20 internationals as well as 31 ODIs in his cricketing career that has spanned the better part of 12-years.
Having been born in Christchurch in New Zealand, Borren, similar to the likes of Dirk Nannes and Tom Cooper defected to play their cricket for the Netherlands, something that these three cricketers certainly do not regret, to say the least. The retirement comes as somewhat of a shock, especially after the Dutch failed to qualify for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in England and Wales.
An eventful career to reflect upon
Having taken over the captaincy from Jeroen Smits in 2009, Borren has had a few brushes with glory in the past. Many still look back at their famous win over England, a match that eventually went into the final delivery. Many also would remember the manner in which England pacer Stuart Broad missed the stumps on two separate occasions to ensure that the Dutch would indeed be handed a rather shock victory.
Borren was also instrumental in the 2011 World Cup in India, something that saw them forge a memorable rivalry against Andrew Strauss’ Brits where they slammed an impressive 296, courtesy of impressive innings from Ryan ten Doeschate.
Borren was also one of the leading run-getters for the Dutch with close to 4000 runs to his name. He also boasts of almost 100 catches, something not many in the Orange shirt have managed.
