Nidahas Trophy 2018: A make-or-break stint for Dinesh Karthik

Dinesh Karthik made his international debut against England at Lords way back in 2004. However, he hasn’t been able to cement his position in the team owing to inconsistent form and emergence of talents like Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Nevertheless, the wicket-keeper batsman notched runs in the domestic circuit and has subsequently staked his claim back into the national squad.

The Tamil Nadu cricketer is currently playing in the T20 triangular series featuring Sri Lanka and Bangladesh and has performed reasonably well, both as a batsman and a keeper. The 32-year old recently spoke to the media and highlighted the significance of performing consistently in order to establish oneself in the national team.

“Every match is important”- Karthik

“There is pressure but at where I am sitting, I need to be able to handle that pressure. I need to embrace it rather than run away from it or use it as an excuse. It doesn’t matter whether I play this tournament, IPL or the England series, for me every match is important,”  Karthik was quoted as saying by Times of India.

Currently, there is a cut-throat competition for places in the Indian team and one has to notch decent performances on a consistent basis in order to stay put in his position. Several cricketers in the domestic circuit are also breathing down the neck of the current players. The recently appointed skipper of the Kolkata Knight Riders also talked about his future aspirations to the media house.

“Opportunities are few and far in between. The competition in the Indian team is so strong that every time you get an opportunity you need to try and give your best. More importantly, I have to perform. I am trying to do well in every match. I am not looking too far at the World Cup. As of now from where I am, every match is important and I am trying to do my best.” Karthik added.
