India’s veteran batsman Suresh Raina feels Prithvi Shaw’s style of batting has likenesses with the way Virender Sehwag batted in Test cricket. The 18-year old scored a spectacular Test ton on debut, bringing up his century at a strike-rate of over 100. He was eventually dismissed by leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo and departed with 134 against his name. Shaw’s knock included as many as 19 fours.
Prithvi Shaw has continued to impress one and all, regardless of his age and the format of cricket he is playing. He made the news for his individual score of 546 for his school Rizvi Springfield, which came off a mere 330 balls. Shaw was just 14 years old when he struck this record-breaking knock. Ever since then, the youngster has grown from strength to strength, and earlier this year he led India to a U19 World Cup triumph in New Zealand.
The Mumbai batsman also had a successful stint with the Delhi Daredevils in the 2018 edition of the IPL. He subsequently toured England with the India A side, where he scored runs aplenty. His performances led to a national call-up for India’s final two Tests against England, but he did not get a chance to play.
Shaw is one for the future
However, on Thursday morning, Prithvi Shaw received his maiden Test cap from the captain Virat Kohli and soon opened the batting with KL Rahul. Although he lost his partner in the very first over, the youngster scored his runs briskly and got to his century just after lunch.
Speaking about Shaw, Suresh Raina was effusive in his praise for Shaw and gave him the best possible compliment by comparing him with Virender Sehwag. “He played really well. Nice, hardworking guy. He reminds me of Viru. The brisk rate at which he scores runs and his fearlessness. The way he played his shots is pure class. He is one for the future,” Raina was quoted as saying by New Indian Express.
Shaw has already sealed his place for the upcoming Australia tour and it will be interesting to see how he fares Down Under.
