Ramiz Raja pays tribute to his elder brother Wasim Raja on his birthday

Former Pakistan opener Ramiz Raja, who is renowned for his witty statements during his commentary stints, paid a tribute to his elder brother Wasim on his birthday. The cricket commentator posted a picture of his late brother Wasim Raja, who played for Pakistan from 1973 to 1985, on his Twitter handle wishing him for what would have been his 64th birthday.

Wasim, born on Multan, was a wonderful all-rounder who represented Pakistan in 57 Tests and 54 ODIs, where he played as a middle-order left-handed batsman, as well as right-arm wrist spin bowler with which he claimed 51 Test wickets.

Wasim Raja belonged to a cricketing family. He grew up with two younger cricketing brothers. Ramiz went on to become the skipper of Pakistan and another brother Zaeem who played first-class cricket. His father Raja Salem Akhtar also played cricket at domestic level and was a high-ranking civil servant.

Wasim was truly made up of swagger. A tall man with a magnificent moustache and nonchalant air, he had captured the minds of Pakistna cricket fans during his time. Australian writer Gideon Haigh perfectly describes him as “Wasim Hasan Raja truly was a raja.”

Post-retirement, he also coached Pakistan under-19 team, and was employed as match referee by International Cricket Council match in 15 Tests and 34 ODIs from 2002 to 2004. He passed away in August 2006 due to a heart attack, while playing cricket for the Surrey over-50s side.
