Former Australian cricketer Rodney Marsh is considered one of the best wicketkeepers to have graced the game. While he was more than a handy batsman lower down the order, Marsh was absolutely sensational as a wicketkeeper. When he retired from the game after representing Australia in 96 Tests, he had collected a then world-record tally of 355 dismissals.

During his illustrious career which spanned over a decade, Marsh played alongside and against a number of legendary players. And he recently picked the best 11 from them. In a video posted by Lord’s Cricket Ground, the legendary Australian revealed the names of the 11 players he considers the best while he was playing.

Marsh named one South African, one English, three Pakistanis, four West Indians and two Australians in his star-studded side. He assigned South Africa’s Barry Richards and West Indies’ Gordon Greenidge the openers’ role in the team. At number three, Marsh went for his compatriot Ian Chappell and also named him the captain of the team.

West Indies’ Viv Richards and Pakistan’s Javed Miandad were picked for the number four and five spot respectively. Both players are two of the best batsmen in the history of the game. Richards is widely considered one of the most destructive batsmen of all time while Miandad was equally impressive with the bat too.

“What an annoying little devil he was, but what a player!” Marsh said about Miandad.

Lower-order and bowling lineup

For the sixth spot, Marsh went for West Indies’ Garfield Sobers, calling him “the best cricketer I’ve ever seen”. Sobers is widely regarded as the greatest allrounder of all time. He scored more than 8,000 runs in Tests with the highest score of 365 in addition to picking up 235 wickets. Sobers scored 26 tons and 30 fifties in his illustrious career.

“He can do anything. He was a complete cricketer and wonderful catcher as well,” Marsh said about the West Indies great before adding: “At number seven, the best I’ve ever seen, Alan Knott from England would be my wicketkeeper.

For the last four spots, he picked Pakistan’s Imran Khan, West Indies’ Andy Roberts, Australia’s Dennis Lillee and Pakistan’s Abdul Qadir to form a potent bowling attack. Khan, Roberts and Lillee were some of the most feared pacers of their times. On the other hand, Qadir is credited for reviving leg-spin in international cricket.
