In cricket, the batsman can be dismissed till the ball isn’t dead. And sometimes, the dismissal of the batsman comes in the most bizarre way possible. Australian pacer James Pattinson, who is out of the selectors’ favour for some years now, saw one such dismissal while batting for his home side Victoria against New South Wales in the ongoing Sheffield Shield at Drummoyne Oval, Sydney, on Tuesday.

Pattinson came out to bat at No.8 after his side was reduced to 64 for 6 after Victoria won the toss and elected to bat. He completed eight runs and was batting against NSW spearhead Trent Copeland in the 47th over when his unusual dismissal happened. It was the third ball of the over that southpaw Pattinson defended but as it headed towards the stumps, the batsman tried to stop it from hitting the timbre.

But to his utter ill luck, he ended up guiding the ball into the wickets, dislodging the bails. The Victorian was distraught while the fielding side rejoiced. The visitors’ woes with the bat continued and they were eventually bowled out for a low score of 106. Australia’s cricket.com.au posted a video of the dismissal on Instagram.

However, Victoria came back hard at the home team to reduce them to 97 for 7 at stumps on Day 1, making the encounter a thrilling one in the making. Pattinson though had little luck with the ball as he went wicketless. Victoria would like to go for the kill early on Wednesday to ensure that NSW don’t get too big a lead on a wicket where batting seemed to be not easy.

Victoria and NSW are the top two teams in the domestic tournament at this point in time, having played eight games each. Though both teams have won four games each, lost one and drawn three, yet Victoria were 5.85 points ahead of NSW.
