The International Cricket Council (ICC) has appointed former West Indian cricketer and a member of Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees, Sir Richie Richardson, as the match referee for the upcoming Independence Cup at Gadaffi Stadium, Lahore between World XI and Pakistan. The three T20I series will be played on 12th, 13th and 15th September.

Richardson, since January 2016 has been the match referee in as many as 11 Tests, 19 ODIs and 18 T20Is until now. In his glorious career for West Indies, he has represented the Maroon Caps in 86 Tests and 224 One-Day Internationals between 1983 and 1996. He has amassed 5,949 in Tests and 6,248 runs in ODIs.

Richie Richardson has also captained the side 24 Tests out which West Indies won 11 Tests. He also served as a team manager of the West Indies team from 2011 to 2015. Interestingly, he played two Tests and four ODI at the Gaddafi Stadium, with his final appearance in the Windies colours in 1991.

The last piece of International action the ground saw was the Sri Lankan players being airlifted post Terror attacks of 2009 on the team bus. Since then countries have been skeptical about touring the country citing security measures. PCB would hope this move from ICC would help revive cricket back in Pakistan.
