The second Test between India and Australia saw a dramatic turnaround on Day 3, as the Australian batters once again surrendered in front of Indian spinners. Pat Cummins’-men resumed their innings on 61/1 after 12 overs, as they looked to continue the attack on the Indian spinners.
Travis Head made his intentions clear by scoring a boundary on the third ball of the day against Ashwin. However, three balls later Ashwin replied in style as he sent him on his way back to the pavilion by getting him caught behind.
Head’s dismissal brought the famed duo of Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne to the crease as Australia looked to set a fighting total for India to chase in the fourth innings. The duo, however, couldn’t extend their partnership beyond 20 runs as Ashwin once again picked up the prized scalp of Steve Smith.
Smith’s wicket sparked Australia’s dramatic collapse who kept on going after the Indian bowling and were persistent with playing sweep shots. They went from 85/2 to 113 all out as five batters perished to sweeps and reverse sweeps.
Seven of the last eight Australian wickets fell to Ravindra Jadeja who registered his best-ever bowling figures in Test cricket in an innings. He picked up 7/42 in 12.1 overs as India were set a target of 115 to win the second Test.
Indian openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul walked out to the middle to chase down the target as quickly as possible. However, Rahul continued his poor form and was dismissed for just one by Nathan Lyon. Rohit Sharma at the other end wanted to finish the game quickly as he played a blistering knock of 31 off 20 balls.
India won the second Test by six wickets
But a miscommunication with Cheteshwar Pujara ended his stay at the crease. From there on, Virat Kohli and Pujara took the innings forward with their 30-run stand for the fourth wicket. Kohli was once again dismissed cheaply as he got stumped against Todd Murphy for 20.
Shreyas Iyer came out all guns blazing and smashed a six and a four in his brief innings of 12 off 10 balls but couldn't take the team home as he got caught on the boundary against Lyon. However, wicketkeeper Srikar Bharat did the job for India with his knock of 23 off 22 balls as they reached the target in 26.4 overs having six wickets in hand.
Pujara, who was playing his 100th Test scored the winning runs and remained unbeaten on 31 as India went 2-0 up in the four-match series and retained the Border Gavaskar Trophy.
