The Indian Premier League 2023 continued to entertain the fans on Thursday, April 20, as Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) locked horns in Match 27, at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali. Sam Curran was once again seen leading the Punjab side with Shikhar Dhawan still recovering from a shoulder niggle. RCB fans were also in for a surprise as Virat Kohli was captaining the side with Faf du Plessis not being able to take the field.
Curran won the toss and invited RCB to bat first, however, the decision backfired as openers Kohli and du Plessis added 59 runs in the powerplay. After a good start in the powerplay, Kohli got a bit slower in his innings as the run rate of the partnership came below 9 after 16 overs with the score on 137/0.
Kohli’s struggle was ended by Harpreet Brar on the first ball of the 17th over as he departed after scoring 59 off 47 balls. Furthermore, Brar got the big fish Glenn Maxwell on the very next ball as he departed for a golden duck. Plessis also got dismissed for a well-made 84 off 56 balls trying to up the ante in the 18th over.
Dinesh Karthik (7 off 5), Mahipal Lomror (7* off 9) and Shahbaz Ahmed (5* off 3) couldn’t finish the innings well as RCB finished their innings on 174/4 in the allotted 20 overs.
In reply, Punjab got off to the worst possible start as opener Atharva Taide was trapped in front of the stumps by Mohammed Siraj on just the second ball of the innings. Wanindu Hasaranga gave second blow to Punjab as he cleaned up Matthew Short in the third over of the innings. Siraj returned in the fourth over and got the prized scalp of Liam Livingstone to leave Punjab reeling at 32/3 after four overs.
After working his magic with the ball, the right-arm seamer inflicted a run-out to dismiss Harpreet Singh Bhatia as PBKS lost their fourth wicket inside the powerplay. It seemed as if Punjab were digging their own grave as captain Curran was also run-out in the 10th over leaving his side reeling at 77/5 after 10 overs.
While wickets continued to fall at the other end, Prabhsimran Singh played a valiant knock of 46 off 30 balls to keep his side in the hunt. However, his dismissal in the 12th over killed all the hopes of PBKS.
Jitesh Sharma brought the hopes of Punjab fans alive with his clean striking. He added 41 runs for the eighth wicket with Shahrukh Khan and took his side to 147/7 in 17.2 overs. Sharma also got a life in the 18th over of the innings as he got dropped Virat Kohli at long-on but Mohammed Siraj brought RCB back in the game with his double strike in the same over.
With 26 needed off the last two overs, Sharma tried to go for a big heave on the second ball of the over but failed to read the slower delivery and ended up giving a simple catch to Shahbaz Ahmed at point. Consequently, Sharma was dismissed for a well-made 41 off 27 balls and RCB won the match by 24 runs.
