Kolkata Knight Riders secured a one-run victory against Rajasthan Royals at the Eden Gardens on Sunday, May 4. With this nerve-jangling win, KKR kept their hopes of qualifying for the playoffs alive.
KKR posted 206/4 at the end of their 20-over quota. Sunil Narine (11 off nine) fell early in the first innings. Rahmanullah Gurbaz (35 off 25) and Ajinkya Rahane (30 off 24) chipped in with a couple of 30s. A 44-run knock by Angkrish Raghuvanshi laid the foundation for the rest of the batters. Andre Russell (57 off 25) and Rinku Singh (19 off six) provided an impactful finish to the innings.
Jofra Archer (1/30 in four overs) and Riyan Parag (1/21 in three overs) were the standout performers for the visitors. Wanindu Hasaranga went wicketless in his four overs. Yudhvir Singh and Maheesh Theekshana picked up a wicket apiece. However, the two were expensive in their spells.
RR were two-down within their first two overs. Vaibhav Suryavanshi (four off two) and Kunal Singh Rathore (zero off five) were the batters to depart early in the run-chase. RR were in all sorts of trouble after they lost half their side by the completion of the eighth over. A 32-run 13th over by Parag off Moeen Ali's third over seemed to have changed the complexion of the game.
However, the standby skipper fell agonizingly short off his maiden IPL ton by five runs. He departed for 95 off 45. Parag's knock comprised six fours and eight sixes. Shubham Dubey tried his best at the end with 25 (14). However, it was not meant to be for RR. Moeen, Harshit Rana, and Varun Chakravarthy all secured a couple of wickets.
