The ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 is about to get underway in a few days as ten nations will be seen going against each other for the coveted trophy. South Africa are once again coming into the tournament as ‘dark horses’ and will give tough competition to all the other teams. The Proteas have arrived in Thiruvananthapuram ahead of their second warm-up fixture vs New Zealand on Monday, October 02.
Ahead of the match, the entire South African team attempted to pronounce ‘Thiruvananthapuram’ which led to several hilarious enunciations of the Indian State. South African stars such as David Miller, Rassie van der Dussen, Kagiso Rabada, and Heinrich Klaasen among others attempted to correctly pronounce the word in one go, however, their laborious attempts left everyone in splits.

South Africa’s first warm-up fixture vs Afghanistan got washed out without a ball being bowled. They will next lock horns with New Zealand to finalise their preparations ahead of the league fixture. The Temba Bavuma-led side will start their campaign against Sri Lanka on Saturday, October 07 at Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
South Africa yet to win their first World Cup title
Notably, the Rainbow nation is yet to win their first World Cup trophy despite coming close to winning it on numerous occasions. They were knocked out in the semi-finals due to a bizarre rain rule in 1992 and were knocked out in the quarter-finals in 1996. Furthermore, they played a heartbreaking tie vs Australia in the semi-final during 1999 and were also beaten by the same opposition in the 2007 final.
The 2011 edition saw a quarterfinal exit after a loss against New Zealand while the Kiwis further knocked them out of the 2015 edition after a thrilling semi-final. Having failed to get their hands on the coveted trophy so far, the Proteas will be eager to finally end their trophy drought by winning the upcoming edition.
