WPL is a massive moment for the sport: Meg Lanning
The 30-year-old expressed her delight after being named the captain of Delhi Capitals and stated she is excited to be part of the historic competition that is set to propel women's cricket to the next level. She expects the competition to grow even further in the coming years, citing India's love for the sport.
"It's a very proud moment for me, firstly to be involved with Delhi Capitals and then to lead them. It's about enjoying yourself, and getting the best out of yourself. WPL is a massive moment for the sport, it's the logical next step and makes a lot of sense. Cricket in India is people's lives and the fact that WPL is up and running, and to be involved in something like this, is amazing. It's only going to grow in the coming years," Lanning said in an official statement.
The appointment of Lanning means all five participating franchises have now named their leaders for the inaugural edition of the WPL. Her compatriots Beth Mooney and Alyssa Healy will lead Gujarat Giants and UP Warriorz respectively, while Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur will lead the Mumbai Indians and batting ace Smriti Mandhana will captain the Royal Challengers Bangalore.
