Gujarat Giants suffered systematic annihilation at the hands of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in match No. 5 of the ongoing Women's Premier League (WPL) 2024 at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Tuesday, February 27.
Renuka Singh and Sophie Devine got their team off to a great start in the powerplay after Smriti Mandhana won the toss and opted to bowl first. The two right-arm pacers didn't dish out too many freebies as the Gujarat batters were made to work very hard for their runs.
Gujarat fans would have pinned their hopes on skipper Beth Mooney but the southaw was dismissed for 8 by Renuka in the third over. The talented Phoebe Litchfield struggled during her stay at the crease which saw her making just 5 runs off 12 balls. Harleen Deol, Veda Krishnamurthy, and Ashleigh Gardner scored a combined total of 38 runs off 58 balls and the lack of intent to score runs was evident.
Sophie Molineux bowled a couple of overs in the middle and two more at the death and finished with remarkable figures of 3/25 in his four overs. Meanwhile, Renuka, who bowled four overs on the trot with the new ball bagged a couple of wickets. Georgia Wareham also chipped in with a solitary wicket as Gujarat finished on 107/7 in their 20 overs.
After a dismal batting effort, it was crucial for Gujarat to start well and make early inroads. However, Mandhana didn't allow the likes of Lea Tahuhu and Kathryn Bryce to apply any sort of pressure with the new ball. The Indian vice-captain lost Devine in the fourth over but she continued on her merry way, hitting a plethora of delectable boundaries.
When Smriti eventually departed for 43 off 27 balls, Bangalore had already reached 72 runs inside nine overs. The southpaw hit eight fours and one six during her blistering innings. After her departure, Sabbhineni Meghana (36* off 28 balls) and Ellyse Perry (23* off 14 balls) stitched an unbeaten 38-run partnership off 23 balls to take their team home in the 13th over.
