Before the start of the four-match Test series against Australia, captained by Tim Paine, India were deemed to be favourites as the hosts didn’t have David Warner and Steve Smith. Virat Kohli and Co survived a scare from the Aussie tail-enders and won at the Adelaide Oval by 31 runs. However, the visitors got a reality check at the new Perth Stadium as they slumped to a colossal defeat by 146 runs.
With the series being level at 1-1, India came out all guns blazing at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and beat their opponents by 137 runs to take an unassailable 2-1 lead in the series. It also meant that they retained the prestigious Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The fourth Test took place at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) and India had the chance of winning their first Test series on Australian soil.

Nevertheless, rain played spoilsport in the last couple of days in the series where not much of play was possible. In the end, Paine’s men managed to salvage a draw. The last day’s play was completely washed off due to persistent rain. With that, the series came to a close and India wrote another chapter in their glorious cricketing history. In the meantime, the right-handed Cheteshwar Pujara was extremely happy.
The 30-year-old from Saurashtra took to Twitter and wrote, “It’s been such a wonderful few weeks in Australia, something that has become historic! Every second the team put has paid off so well. Thank you all for the love and wishes pouring in. It’s been an overwhelming day, a day I’ll cherish for the rest of my life! #TeamIndia #INDvAUS,”
