Kolkata Knight Riders have tasted success on a couple of occasions under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir. However, the franchise released him ahead of the IPL retention ceremony and subsequently was bagged by the Delhi Daredevils in the auction. The Knights went for some prominent names, however, eyebrows were raised when they didn’t pick a full-fledged skipper.
Most lately, Chris Lynn’s name has been doing the rounds for the role of leadership. However, the Aussie cricketer dislocated his shoulder in the Final of the triangular T20 series against New Zealand at the Eden Park in Auckland. Consequently, he was ruled out of the ongoing Pakistan Super League. However, to his relief, doctors have iterated that he doesn’t require any surgery.
Recently, Sourav Ganguly, the former Indian cricketer, voiced his opinion on who should be the skipper of the Knight Riders provided Lynn doesn’t make a comeback. As per Sourav Ganguly, Robin Uthappa is the appropriate choice for the captain. He also mentioned that Dinesh Karthik would have been considered, however, the fact that he would make his debut for the Knight Riders works against him.
Meanwhile, Robin Uthappa also expressed his eagerness to lead the side in a recent interaction with the media. “I’ll be honoured if the opportunity came along but it’s for the think-tank to decide – whatever role they want me to take, I’ll give my 110%. Adding value to my team as a cricketer is crucial to my game,” Uthappa was quoted as saying by Sportstar.
Kolkata Knight Riders have managed to bag some big names in the form of Lynn, Mitchell Starc, and Andre Russell. They also have some youngsters in their ranks in the form of Kamlesh Nagarkoti, Shivam Mavi, and Shubman Gill. However, it will be interesting to see the management’s choice as the eventual leader of the Shah Rukh Khan-led franchise.
